What to check before joining online Quran classes

There are hundreds of online Quran academies, and from the outside they look alike. This checklist shows what to check before you join, the questions to ask and the red flags to watch for, so you can choose a teacher with confidence, whichever academy you pick.

The checklist

CheckWhat good looks like
A real trial lessonYou should be able to try lessons with the actual teacher before you pay, not just a sales call.
Clear prices in poundsMonthly fees, lesson length and what happens with missed lessons should be written down before you commit.
One-to-one or group, stated clearlyKnow whether your child will have the teacher to themselves or share the lesson.
Teacher gender and languageCan you choose a male or female teacher? Can they explain in English, and in your family language if you need it?
Recitation standardAsk how teachers are checked. Some hold an ijazah (a certified chain of recitation); at minimum, you should hear them recite well in the trial.
Child safetyA written safeguarding policy, parents welcome to sit in, and no private contact between teacher and child outside lessons.
UK timesLessons scheduled in UK time, including around school, work and daylight-saving changes.
A real address and contact detailsA named business with a UK address, phone number and email, plus clear terms and refund policy.

Questions to ask the academy

  1. Will the trial be with the teacher my child will actually have?
  2. Will we keep the same teacher and time slot each week?
  3. What happens if we miss a lesson, or the teacher does?
  4. How do you check your teachers' recitation, and do any hold an ijazah?
  5. Can a parent sit in on lessons? What is your safeguarding policy?
  6. How will you report my child's progress?
  7. How do we cancel, and how much notice do you need?

Frequently asked questions

Are online Quran classes safe for children?

They can be, if the academy has clear rules: parents may watch, lessons happen only on agreed platforms, and teachers never contact children privately. Ask to see the safeguarding policy. Ours is on our safeguarding page.

Does the teacher need an ijazah?

An ijazah is a strong sign of recitation quality, especially for hifz and advanced tajweed. For beginners, a teacher with excellent recitation who teaches patiently is what matters most. Either way, listen to them recite in the trial.

How much should online Quran classes cost in the UK?

Prices vary widely between academies. Compare the price per lesson rather than per month, and check the lesson length and whether it is one-to-one. Our fees are listed in full on our pricing page.

Should I choose group or one-to-one lessons?

Group lessons are cheaper; one-to-one lessons let the teacher hear and correct every word. For reading and tajweed, one-to-one usually leads to faster progress.
