What our tajweed classes cover
The course follows the rules of the riwayah of Hafs ʿan ʿAsim, the recitation most widely used in the UK. Each rule is explained, heard from the teacher, then practised in the verses you are reading:

Levels: basic to advanced
Level 1: Foundations
Correct makharij for every letter, short and long vowels, sukoon and shaddah, the difference between sun and moon letters, and qalqalah. The aim is clear, correct pronunciation of each word.
Level 2: Core rules
Noon and meem sakinah, ghunnah, the main types of madd, and heavy and light letters, applied while reading longer passages.
Level 3: Fluency and stopping
Correct stopping and starting (waqf and ibtida), consistent madd lengths, and steady recitation at a measured pace (tarteel). Students who complete this level and want a formal certificate can move on to the ijazah course.
Already reading? You will not restart
Many students learned to read as children and worry that tajweed means going back to the beginning. It does not. In your first free lesson the teacher listens to you recite, notes which mistakes you make, and works on those. Letters you already pronounce correctly are left alone.
How long the course takes
It depends on how many lessons you take each week, how much you practise and where you start. Students who already read fluently can usually learn the core rules within a few months of regular lessons. Applying them without thinking takes longer, and comes from reciting to a teacher week after week. We explain realistic timelines in how long it takes to learn the Quran.
Why tajweed matters
Some mistakes change the meaning of a word, for example confusing ح with ه, or shortening a vowel that should be long. Scholars have long treated reciting without such mistakes as a duty for every reciter. The question of how obligatory tajweed is, and why, is covered in our tajweed rules guide.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to know Arabic to join the tajweed course?
You need to be able to read the Arabic letters, even slowly. You do not need to understand Arabic. If you cannot read the letters yet, start with Noorani Qaida, which teaches basic tajweed from the first lesson.
Can adults join tajweed classes?
Yes. Many of our tajweed students are adults who learned to read as children and want to correct their recitation. Lessons are one-to-one, so nobody else hears you read.
Can I learn tajweed by myself?
You can learn the rules from books and videos, but applying them needs someone to listen. Most recitation mistakes are small and hard to hear in your own voice, which is why tajweed has always been learned by reciting to a teacher.
Will I get a certificate?
Advanced students who want a formal certification can progress to our ijazah course, which leads to an ijazah with sanad.
