Islamic studies for children, teens and adults

Islamic studies gives learners the everyday knowledge a Muslim needs: what we believe, how to pray, the duas we say each day, the life of the Prophet ﷺ and good manners. Lessons are one-to-one, live and taught at the right level for each age.

What is covered

TopicWhat the learner studies
Beliefs (aqeedah)The six articles of faith, who Allah is, the prophets and the angels, explained simply and without argument.
Wudu and salahHow to make wudu, the five daily prayers, what to recite and the common mistakes, practised step by step.
Daily duas and short surahsDuas for waking, eating, travelling and sleeping, and the short surahs used in salah, with meanings.
SeerahThe life of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, told as a story for children and in more depth for older learners.
Manners (akhlaq)Honesty, kindness to parents, respect for others and good character in everyday life.
Basic fiqhFasting in Ramadan, zakah, halal and haram, purity and wudu, and the practical questions that come up at home and school.

Salah is taught hands-on: the learner practises each position and recitation with the teacher watching. Our guide on how to pray salah covers the same steps in writing, and reading the Quran without wudu answers one of the questions learners ask most.

By age

For a weekday routine of Quran and Islamic studies together, see our online madrasa. For reading the Quran itself, see Noorani Qaida and the Quran reading course.

For reverts

If you have recently taken the shahada, Islamic studies helps you learn salah, wudu and the basics of daily life as a Muslim, in plain English and with no question too small. Most reverts pair it with learning to read; see Quran classes for reverts, or all our online Quran classes.

Frequently asked questions

Is Islamic studies taught one-to-one?

Yes. Every lesson is 30 minutes with one learner and one teacher, in UK time, on Zoom, Google Meet or Microsoft Teams.

Can my child combine Islamic studies with Quran lessons?

Yes. Many families split the week between the two, for example three Quran days and one or two Islamic studies days. This is how our online madrasa works.

Which school of thought do you follow?

Lessons focus on the core beliefs and practices shared by mainstream Sunni Muslims. For detailed fiqh questions, the teacher will follow the school your family follows where possible.

How much does it cost?

The same as all our courses: from £25 a month for two lessons a week. See pricing.

Is it suitable for new Muslims?

Yes. Reverts often take Islamic studies alongside learning to read. See Quran classes for reverts.
