Quran classes for families in Cardiff
Cardiff's Muslim community is one of the oldest in Britain: Yemeni and Somali sailors settled in Butetown, once called Tiger Bay, more than a century ago. Today Cardiff's Muslims, about 9% of the city at the 2021 census, include Arab, Somali, Bangladeshi and Pakistani-heritage families, and Arabic is spoken as a main language by many residents here.
Cardiff is also a university city, and students at Cardiff University and Cardiff Met can take tajweed lessons or work towards a first complete reading of the Quran.
Cardiff's Yemeni and Somali families have one of the longest histories of any Muslim community in Britain, and many want children to keep strong Quran and Arabic links. Arabic-speaking teachers are available.
