How is the Quran divided? Juz, hizb, ruku and manzil
Besides its 114 surahs, the Quran is divided into 30 juz, 60 hizb, 556 ruku and 7 manzil. None of these change the text; they exist to help you read, memorise and revise in steady portions. Here is what each one is and how to use it.

Juz (para)
A juz (plural ajza), called a para or sipara in Urdu, is one of 30 roughly equal parts. Reading one juz a day completes the Quran in a month, which is why the division is so popular in Ramadan (see our Ramadan Quran reading plan). Each juz is usually known by its opening words, such as "Alif Lam Mim" for the first and "‘Amma" for the thirtieth (Juz Amma).

Hizb and quarters
Each juz is split into two hizb (60 in total), and each hizb into four quarters, marked in the margin of many mushafs. Hifz students often use quarters as a daily revision target.
Ruku
A ruku is a thematic section of a surah, marked in IndoPak mushafs with the letter ‘ayn in the margin. A ruku is a natural place to pause and a common unit for reciting in prayer. The standard count is 556.
Manzil
The seven manzil divide the Quran so it can be completed in a week, one manzil a day. In hifz, the word manzil is also used for revising older memorisation (see our hifz course).
| Manzil | Starts at |
|---|---|
| 1 | Al-Fatihah 1:1 |
| 2 | Al-Ma'idah 5:1 |
| 3 | Yunus 10:1 |
| 4 | Al-Isra 17:1 |
| 5 | Ash-Shu'ara 26:1 |
| 6 | As-Saffat 37:1 |
| 7 | Qaf 50:1 |
