How much Quran to read daily: a realistic routine

How much Quran to read daily has no single answer: the Quran itself says to recite what is easy. The Sunnah gives a guide, a full reading once a month, and a principle: small and regular beats large and occasional. Here is what each daily amount looks like and how to build a routine you can keep.

Building a routine you will keep

  1. Start smaller than you think. One page a day for a month builds a habit; four pages a day for a week often does not.
  2. Attach it to a prayer. After Fajr is the most common choice: the house is quiet and the day has not begun.
  3. Increase every few weeks, from one page to two, then four.
  4. Include understanding. Read the translation of a few verses each day; see how to understand the Quran.
  5. Keep Ramadan special, with a bigger target; see our Ramadan Quran reading plan.

If reading is still slow

A page that takes fifteen minutes is hard to keep up daily. Work on fluency first, with how to read Quran fluently, and keep the daily amount small while you do. For families, our guide on teaching Quran to your child at home shows a daily routine for children. A 30-minute lesson two to five days a week in our Quran reading course builds both fluency and consistency.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum amount of Quran to read daily?

There is no fixed minimum. The Quran says “recite what is easy of the Quran” (Al-Muzzammil 73:20). What matters is reading something every day and growing it gradually.

Is it better to read a lot once a week or a little every day?

A little every day. The Prophet ﷺ said the most beloved deeds to Allah are those done regularly, even if small (Sahih al-Bukhari 6464, Sahih Muslim 783).

Does reading from memory count?

Yes. Reciting what you have memorised, in or out of salah, is reading the Quran. Many huffaz do most of their daily reading from memory.

How do I keep it up when I am busy?

Link it to something fixed: a page after Fajr, or a few verses after each prayer. Keep a mushaf or app where you will see it, and never skip two days in a row.
