Surah Ar-Rahman: meaning, the repeated verse and its virtues
Surah Ar-Rahman (“The Most Merciful”) is the 55th surah, 78 verses long, and one of the most recognisable in the Quran because of one verse that returns again and again. Here are its opening verses, what the refrain means, the flow of the surah and what is authentically reported about it.

The opening verses
The surah opens with one of Allah’s names, not with an oath or a story, and the first gift it names is the Quran itself, before even the creation of the human being. Teaching the Quran is presented as the first expression of His mercy.
The repeated verse
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ ﴿١٣﴾
This verse appears 31 times. The dual “you both” addresses humans and jinn, who are both mentioned in the surah. After each set of blessings, whether in creation, in the warnings of the Day of Judgement or in the gardens of Paradise, the listener is asked the same question, so the surah becomes a long, rhythmic reflection on gratitude.
A report in at-Tirmidhi (3291) describes the Prophet ﷺ reciting the surah to his Companions, who stayed silent, and telling them that when he recited it to the jinn, each time he reached this verse they answered: “We deny none of Your favours, our Lord; all praise is Yours.” Scholars differ on its grading; many Muslims say these words when they hear the verse.
The surah, section by section
| Verses | Theme | Summary |
|---|---|---|
| 1–13 | The Most Merciful teaches the Quran | Allah taught the Quran, created the human being and taught him clear speech; the sun, moon, stars and trees follow their course; the heavens are raised and the balance set, so do not cheat in the balance. |
| 14–25 | Creation of humans and jinn; the two seas | Humans created from clay and jinn from smokeless fire; the Lord of the two easts and two wests; two seas that meet but do not mix, yielding pearl and coral; ships like mountains. |
| 26–45 | Everything perishes except His Face | All on earth will pass away; only the Face of your Lord remains. Every day He is about some matter. The Day of Judgement, when the sky splits and the guilty are known by their marks. |
| 46–61 | Two gardens for those who fear their Lord | For whoever fears standing before his Lord there are two gardens, with flowing springs, every kind of fruit in pairs, and companions of modest gaze. "Is the reward for good anything but good?" |
| 62–78 | Two further gardens | Beneath those, two more gardens, dark green, with gushing springs, fruit, palms and pomegranates. The surah ends: "Blessed is the name of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honour." |
Reciting Ar-Rahman well
Ar-Rahman is a favourite for recitation practice because the refrain gives a learner the same phrase 31 times. Points to watch:
- The long vowel in ءَالَآءِ carries a connected madd (four or five counts); see madd in tajweed.
- The ذِّ in تُكَذِّبَانِ has a shaddah: hold it, and keep the dhal from turning into a “z”. See makharij al-huruf.
- The surah is full of noon and meem with shaddah, which take a full ghunnah.
To memorise it, many learners take the verses between two refrains as one unit; the refrain then becomes the anchor that holds each section in place. Our guide to memorising the Quran has the full method, and the online hifz course lets a teacher check every section. For neighbouring surahs, see Surah Al-Waqiah, which follows it, and all 114 surahs.
Frequently asked questions
How many times is "Fabi ayyi ala‘i rabbikuma tukadhdhiban" repeated?
Thirty-one times, first at verse 13. It means "So which of the favours of your Lord will you both deny?" and is addressed to humans and jinn together, which is why the verb is dual.
How many verses are in Surah Ar-Rahman?
78 verses, on pages 531 to 534 of the Madinah mushaf, in juz 27.
Is Surah Ar-Rahman Makki or Madani?
The standard mushaf heading lists it as Madani, while many scholars of tafsir held that it is Makki, as its style and themes suggest. Both views are recorded in the classical tafsir works.
Is Surah Ar-Rahman "the bride of the Quran"?
A narration calling it the bride (‘arus) of the Quran is recorded by al-Bayhaqi, but hadith scholars graded it weak. The surah’s beauty does not depend on it.
