Order and Arabic follow the list in Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi. Meanings are short summaries; each name has depths explained in books of tafsir and ‘aqidah.
How to learn the names
- Learn a few each week, with their meaning, rather than memorising the list as a song only.
- Call on Allah by the name that fits your need: Ar-Razzaq when asking for provision, Al-Ghafur when asking forgiveness, Ash-Shafi when ill.
- Notice them in the Quran: most verses end with two names, such as “Al-Ghafur ar-Rahim”, and understanding them deepens your recitation; see how to understand the Quran.

Frequently asked questions
What is the reward for learning the 99 names of Allah?
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Allah has ninety-nine names, one hundred less one; whoever counts them (ahsaha) will enter Paradise” (Sahih al-Bukhari 2736, Sahih Muslim 2677). Scholars explain “counting” as learning them, understanding them and living by them.
Where does the list of 99 names come from?
The well-known list is from a narration in Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi (3507). Hadith scholars say the list itself was likely added by a narrator, and Allah has more names than these: some are known only to Him. All the names in the list are established in the Quran or Sunnah.
What is the greatest name of Allah?
Scholars differ. Many say it is “Allah” itself; others point to “Al-Hayy al-Qayyum” (the Ever-Living, the Sustainer), which appears in Ayat al-Kursi.
Can I name my child with one of Allah’s names?
Names that belong to Allah alone, such as Ar-Rahman, are given with “‘Abd” (servant of): ‘Abdur-Rahman, ‘Abdullah. Some names, such as Rahim or Karim, are also used for people without the definite article.
