Al-Fatihah verse by verse

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

All praise is for Allah, Lord of all the worlds,

the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful,

Master of the Day of Judgement.

You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help.

Guide us to the straight path,

the path of those You have blessed, not of those who have earned anger, nor of those who have gone astray.

Meanings are our plain-English rendering. Arabic text: Tanzil (Uthmani, Hafs).

What it means

The surah moves in three steps: praise of Allah (verses 1–4), a promise of worship and reliance on Him alone (verse 5), and a request for guidance (verses 6–7). In a well-known hadith, Allah says He has divided this surah between Himself and His servant, answering each part as it is recited (Sahih Muslim 395). That is why it is both a prayer and a summary of the whole Quran.

How to memorise it correctly

Because you will recite it for the rest of your life, learn it with a teacher if you can. Listen to a careful reciter, learn one verse a day for a week, and recite it to someone who can correct each letter. Then add a short surah from the last 10 surahs so you can pray (see which surahs to recite in salah and how to pray salah). Its names and place in the Quran are covered in all 114 surahs.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Al-Fatihah recited in every prayer?

The Prophet ﷺ said: "There is no prayer for the one who does not recite the Opening of the Book" (Sahih al-Bukhari 756). It is recited in every rak‘ah.

Is "Bismillah" part of Al-Fatihah?

In the Kufan count used with the recitation of Hafs, the basmalah is the first verse of Al-Fatihah. Other counts and some schools of law treat it differently.

Is "Amin" part of Al-Fatihah?

No. Saying "Amin" (O Allah, accept) after Al-Fatihah is a sunnah, but it is not a verse of the surah, so it is not written in the mushaf.

What are the other names of Al-Fatihah?

Umm al-Kitab (Mother of the Book), Umm al-Quran, As-Sab‘ al-Mathani (the Seven Oft-Repeated, see Al-Hijr 15:87) and Al-Hamd (The Praise), among others.
