Ayat al-Kursi: meaning, virtues and how to memorise it
Ayat al-Kursi (Al-Baqarah 2:255) is the greatest verse of the Quran. In one verse it describes who Allah is: living, sustaining, all-knowing and all-powerful. Here is the Arabic, its meaning phrase by phrase, when to recite it, and an easy way to memorise it.

ٱللَّهُ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ٱلْحَىُّ ٱلْقَيُّومُ ۚ لَا تَأْخُذُهُۥ سِنَةٌۭ وَلَا نَوْمٌۭ ۚ لَّهُۥ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ ۗ مَن ذَا ٱلَّذِى يَشْفَعُ عِندَهُۥٓ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِهِۦ ۚ يَعْلَمُ مَا بَيْنَ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَمَا خَلْفَهُمْ ۖ وَلَا يُحِيطُونَ بِشَىْءٍۢ مِّنْ عِلْمِهِۦٓ إِلَّا بِمَا شَآءَ ۚ وَسِعَ كُرْسِيُّهُ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ ۖ وَلَا يَـُٔودُهُۥ حِفْظُهُمَا ۚ وَهُوَ ٱلْعَلِىُّ ٱلْعَظِيمُ ﴿٢٥٥﴾

When to recite it
- Before sleeping: in a hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari (2311), the one who recites it at night is described as having a guardian from Allah until morning.
- After each obligatory prayer: reported by an-Nasa'i and graded authentic by many scholars.
- As part of the morning and evening remembrance many Muslims keep.
How to memorise it
Learn it in the ten phrases above: one or two a day, joining each new phrase to the ones before. Listen to it recited slowly, then recite it before sleeping each night, so revision becomes a habit. Why is it called the greatest verse?
The Prophet ﷺ asked Ubayy ibn Ka‘b which verse of the Quran is greatest; Ubayy answered with Ayat al-Kursi, and the Prophet ﷺ confirmed it (Sahih Muslim 810).
When should I recite Ayat al-Kursi?
Two well-known times are before sleeping, reported in Sahih al-Bukhari (2311) as a protection through the night, and after each obligatory prayer, in a hadith recorded by an-Nasa'i in as-Sunan al-Kubra and graded authentic by many scholars.
Can children learn Ayat al-Kursi?
Yes. Most children can learn it in two or three weeks by learning one phrase a day, ideally after they can read the Arabic.
