Surah Al-Baqarah: overview, themes and how to read it
Surah Al-Baqarah (“The Cow”) is the second and longest surah of the Quran: 286 verses, revealed in Madinah. It contains Ayat al-Kursi, the longest verse in the Quran, and some of the most-recited verses of all. Here is a map of the surah, its authentic virtues and a plan to read it.

The opening verses
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ الٓمٓ ﴿١﴾ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْكِتَٰبُ لَا رَيْبَ ۛ فِيهِ ۛ هُدًۭى لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ ﴿٢﴾ ٱلَّذِينَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱلْغَيْبِ وَيُقِيمُونَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَمِمَّا رَزَقْنَٰهُمْ يُنفِقُونَ ﴿٣﴾ وَٱلَّذِينَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِمَآ أُنزِلَ إِلَيْكَ وَمَآ أُنزِلَ مِن قَبْلِكَ وَبِٱلْءَاخِرَةِ هُمْ يُوقِنُونَ ﴿٤﴾ أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ عَلَىٰ هُدًۭى مِّن رَّبِّهِمْ ۖ وَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْمُفْلِحُونَ ﴿٥﴾
Coming straight after Al-Fatihah, which ends with the prayer “guide us to the straight path”, Al-Baqarah begins by describing the Book as that guidance.

Two passages have their own guides: Ayat al-Kursi (2:255) and the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah (2:285–286).
Its virtues, from authentic hadith
- Reading it at home: “Do not make your houses into graves. Shaytan flees from the house in which Surah Al-Baqarah is recited” (Sahih Muslim 780).
- Blessing: “Recite Surah Al-Baqarah, for taking it is a blessing, leaving it is a regret, and the sorcerers cannot withstand it” (Sahih Muslim 804).
- Its closing verses: whoever recites the last two verses at night, they will suffice him (Sahih al-Bukhari 5009, Sahih Muslim 807).

How many verses are in Surah Al-Baqarah?
286 verses, the most of any surah. It runs from page 2 to page 49 of the Madinah mushaf, across the first two and a half juz.
Why is it called "The Cow"?
It is named after the story in verses 67–73, in which the Children of Israel were commanded to slaughter a cow and kept asking questions to avoid doing it.
How long does it take to read Surah Al-Baqarah?
At a steady tarteel pace, most fluent readers take around two hours. Many people split it across several days, or read it in one sitting at home on a weekend.
Is Surah Al-Baqarah Makki or Madani?
Madani. It was revealed over several years after the Hijrah, which is why it contains so many laws for the new Muslim community.
