The Sunnah of iftar

When someone invites you to iftar, the Prophet ﷺ said: “Aftara ‘indakumus-sa’imun, wa akala ta‘amakumul-abrar, wa sallat ‘alaykumul-mala’ikah” (May fasting people break their fast with you, the righteous eat your food, and the angels pray for you) (Sunan Abi Dawud 3854, graded sahih).

Iftar times for UK cities are in Ramadan 2027 UK; the rules are in rules of fasting; and more du‘as are in our daily duas and dua before and after eating.

Frequently asked questions

What is the dua for breaking the fast?

“Dhahabadh-dhama’u wabtallatil-‘uruqu wa thabatal-ajru in sha’ Allah” (The thirst has gone, the veins are moistened, and the reward is confirmed, if Allah wills), which the Prophet ﷺ said when breaking his fast (Sunan Abi Dawud 2357, graded hasan).

What about “Allahumma laka sumtu wa ‘ala rizqika aftartu”?

This popular du‘a (“O Allah, for You I fasted and with Your provision I break my fast”) is reported with a weak chain (Sunan Abi Dawud 2358, mursal). Its meaning is good and it is fine as a personal du‘a, but the authentic Sunnah wording is the one above.

Do I say the dua before or after eating the date?

Say “Bismillah” and break the fast, then say the du‘a, since it describes the thirst having gone. The time of breaking the fast is also a time when du‘a is answered, so make your own du‘a too.
