Qalqalah letters: the five letters, rules and examples
Qalqalah is the slight echoing bounce you hear when certain letters have no vowel. It is one of the first tajweed rules most learners meet, and one of the easiest to hear. Here are the five qalqalah letters, the levels of qalqalah and clear examples from the Quran.

The five qalqalah letters
The qalqalah letters are ق ط ب ج د, remembered by the phrase قُطْبُ جَدٍّ. Each is a strong letter whose sound is fully closed off in the mouth, so when it has a sukoon, it needs a small release to be heard at all. That release is the qalqalah.
| Letter | Name | Example (sukoon mid-word) | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| ق | Qaf | يَقْطَعُونَ | Al-Baqarah 2:27 |
| ط | Taa | أَطْوَارًا | Nuh 71:14 |
| ب | Baa | رَبْوَةٍ | Al-Baqarah 2:265 |
| ج | Jeem | يَجْعَلُونَ | Al-Baqarah 2:19 |
| د | Daal | يَدْعُونَ | Al-Baqarah 2:221 |
Minor and major qalqalah
| Level | When it happens | Strength | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minor (sughra) | The letter has a sukoon in the middle of a word or phrase | Light | يَقْطَعُونَ |
| Major (kubra) | You stop on the letter at the end of a word, usually at the end of a verse | Clearer | ٱلْفَلَقِ (Al-Falaq 113:1), stopping on the qaf |
| Strongest | You stop on a qalqalah letter that also has a shaddah | Strongest | وَتَبَّ (Al-Masad 111:1), stopping on the baa |
Some teachers count these as two levels and others as three or four; the practical rule is the same: the stronger the stop, the clearer the bounce.
Examples from the Quran
- قُلْ هُوَ ٱللَّهُ أَحَدٌ (Al-Ikhlas 112:1): stopping on أَحَدْ gives a major qalqalah on the daal.
- وَٱلسَّمَآءِ ذَاتِ ٱلْبُرُوجِ (Al-Buruj 85:1): stopping on the jeem.
- قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ ٱلْفَلَقِ (Al-Falaq 113:1): stopping on the qaf.
- تَبَّتْ يَدَآ أَبِى لَهَبٍ وَتَبَّ (Al-Masad 111:1): the strongest qalqalah, on the doubled baa.
Because these surahs are short and often memorised early, they are ideal for practising qalqalah. They are also in our list of the last 10 surahs.
Common mistakes
- Adding a vowel: saying "aHada" or "falaqi" when stopping. The bounce must stay short and vowel-free.
- Missing the bounce: swallowing the letter so it cannot be heard, especially the baa and daal.
- Bouncing the wrong letters: kaaf (ك) and taa (ت) are not qalqalah letters.
- Over-bouncing in the middle of words: a minor qalqalah should be light, not a jolt.

Frequently asked questions
What are the qalqalah letters?
There are five: ق ط ب ج د (qaf, taa, baa, jeem and daal), remembered as قُطْبُ جَدٍّ. They bounce only when they carry a sukoon or when you stop on them.
Does qalqalah apply when the letter has a vowel?
No. A qalqalah letter with a fathah, kasrah or dammah is read normally. The bounce happens only on a still letter.
Is qalqalah the same as adding a vowel?
No. The bounce is a slight release of sound, not a short vowel. Adding "a", "i" or "u" after the letter is one of the most common mistakes.
Which letters are often confused with qalqalah letters?
Kaaf (ك) and taa (ت) are sometimes bounced by mistake. They are not qalqalah letters, so they are released quietly with breath instead.
