How zakat is calculated

  1. Choose your zakat date: the anniversary, in the Islamic calendar, of when your wealth first reached the nisab. Many people use 1 Ramadan for ease.
  2. Add up zakatable wealth on that date: cash, savings, gold, silver, investments, trade stock and money you expect back.
  3. Deduct debts due now, such as this month’s rent, bills and loan instalments (not the whole mortgage).
  4. Compare with the nisab. If what remains is at or above it, pay 2.5% of the total.

Shares and investments

For shares held to trade, pay on the full market value. For long-term shares, many scholars allow paying on your share of the company’s zakatable assets, which is often estimated at around a quarter to a third of the share value. Ask a scholar or your charity’s zakat service if unsure.

Gold jewellery

The Hanafi school says zakat is due on gold and silver jewellery; the other three schools generally exempt jewellery worn regularly. Follow your school or ask your imam.

Zakat is the third of the 5 pillars of Islam. In Ramadan, there is also zakat al-fitr, a separate small payment for each person. For Ramadan dates, see Ramadan 2027 UK.

Frequently asked questions

What is the nisab for zakat?

The minimum wealth on which zakat is due: the value of 87.48 g of gold or 612.36 g of silver. Many UK scholars and charities recommend the silver nisab, which is lower and so includes more people and benefits the poor; others use gold. Check today’s price per gram with a bullion dealer.

Is zakat due on a house or car?

No. Zakat is not due on your home, car, furniture or personal belongings. It is due on cash, savings, gold, silver, trade goods and investments held for a lunar year.

Is zakat due on a pension?

Scholars differ. A common UK approach is to pay on the part of a pension you can access now; for workplace pensions you cannot access, many scholars say zakat is not due until you can. Ask a scholar for your situation.

Who can receive zakat?

The eight categories in At-Tawbah 9:60, including the poor, the needy and those in debt. Zakat cannot be given to your parents, children or spouse. Most people pay through a UK mosque or a registered Muslim charity.
