How to teach children to pray, age by age
To teach children to pray, start early through example, teach wudu and the words step by step, and build the habit gently from age seven, as the Prophet ﷺ advised. Here is an age-by-age plan for UK families, with what to teach first and how to keep it positive.

An age-by-age plan
| Age | What to do |
|---|---|
| Under 5 | Let them pray beside you and copy the movements. No pressure: it is play and imitation. Teach Bismillah, Allahu akbar and Al-Fatihah by hearing. |
| 5–7 | Teach wudu step by step and the words of salah, starting with Al-Fatihah and one short surah. Aim for one prayer a day together, often Maghrib. |
| 7 | “Instruct your children to pray when they are seven” (Sunan Abi Dawud 495). Encourage all five daily prayers, gently and consistently. |
| 7–10 | Build the habit: a prayer mat of their own, a chart, praying in congregation at home. Add tashahhud and the du‘a after it. |
| 10+ | Prayer becomes a firm expectation, as the same hadith indicates. Most children now pray independently, and many are close to puberty, when salah becomes obligatory. |
What to teach, in order
- Wudu: practise at the sink together; see how to perform wudu.
- The movements: standing, bowing, prostrating, sitting. Children learn these by copying.
- The words: Allahu akbar, Al-Fatihah, a short surah, the tasbih in ruku‘ and sujud, then the tashahhud. See short surahs for salah.
- The times: show them the five prayer times on a UK timetable or app, and pray at least one together every day.
For the complete method, see how to pray salah, and avoid the common mistakes in salah.
Keeping it positive
Children learn to love what their parents love. Pray where they can see you, celebrate milestones, such as their first full prayer, and avoid making salah a punishment or a source of fear. Correct the recitation early: Al-Fatihah is recited in every rak‘ah, so mistakes repeat. Short daily practice with a teacher helps; see how to teach Quran to your child at home.
Frequently asked questions
At what age should a child start praying?
The Prophet ﷺ said to instruct children to pray at seven (Sunan Abi Dawud 495). Salah becomes obligatory at puberty. Many children enjoy praying beside their parents long before seven.
What does the hadith about age ten mean?
The hadith mentions disciplining children at ten if they neglect prayer. Scholars stress this means firmness, never harm; the Prophet ﷺ never hit a child (Sahih Muslim 2328). Encouragement, routine and example come first.
How do I teach my child the words of salah?
Start with Al-Fatihah and Al-Ikhlas, then the tashahhud. Practise one part a week. A Quran teacher can check pronunciation, which is hard to correct later.
How can I make my child want to pray?
Pray together, praise every effort, connect prayer to talking to Allah rather than a chore, and let them lead the family prayer sometimes once they know the words.
