Surah Al-Kahf: the four stories and reading it on Friday

Surah Al-Kahf (“The Cave”) is the 18th surah, 110 verses at the heart of the Quran, read by many Muslims every Friday. It tells four stories, each about a different trial of life. Here they are, with what is reported about reading it on Friday and memorising its first ten verses.

The four stories

VersesStoryWhat happensLesson
9–26The People of the CaveYoung believers flee persecution and sleep in a cave for many years.A trial of faith
32–44The owner of two gardensA wealthy man forgets that his gardens come from Allah, and loses them.A trial of wealth
60–82Musa and Al-KhidrMusa travels to learn from a servant of Allah whose actions seem strange until they are explained.A trial of knowledge
83–98Dhul-QarnaynA just and powerful ruler travels east and west and builds a barrier against Ya'juj and Ma'juj.A trial of power

The four trials (faith, wealth, knowledge and power) are often linked to the trials of the Dajjal at the end of time, which is why the surah is so closely connected to protection from him.

The prayer of the young men

When the young believers took refuge in the cave, they prayed:

إِذْ أَوَى ٱلْفِتْيَةُ إِلَى ٱلْكَهْفِ فَقَالُوا۟ رَبَّنَآ ءَاتِنَا مِن لَّدُنكَ رَحْمَةًۭ وَهَيِّئْ لَنَا مِنْ أَمْرِنَا رَشَدًۭا ﴿١٠﴾

“Our Lord, grant us mercy from Yourself, and make our affair right for us.”Al-Kahf 18:10 (meaning). Arabic: Tanzil (Uthmani, Hafs)

Reading Al-Kahf on Friday

A hadith recorded by al-Hakim and al-Bayhaqi, and graded authentic by several scholars, promises a light between the two Fridays for the one who reads it on Friday. Many people read it after Fajr or before Jumu‘ah. If that is hard, read a section each evening from Thursday's Maghrib. The surah spans about 12 pages, from page 293 in juz 15, through the middle of the Quran.

Memorising the first ten verses

The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever memorises the first ten verses of Surah Al-Kahf will be protected from the Dajjal (Sahih Muslim 809). They take about one page; at a few lines a day, most learners memorise them within two weeks. See how to memorise the Quran for the method, and our online hifz course to memorise with a teacher.
