The opening verses

“Ya Sin. By the wise Quran, you are truly one of the messengers, on a straight path.”Ya Sin 36:1–4 (meaning). Arabic: Tanzil (Uthmani, Hafs)

"Ya Sin" are two Arabic letters (ya and sin), like the separate letters that open several surahs. Their meaning is known to Allah; the surah takes its name from them.

What is reported about Yasin

Several narrations praise Surah Yasin, including the description of it as "the heart of the Quran" and the practice of reading it for the dying. Hadith scholars have discussed the strength of these reports, and many consider their chains weak, so we mention them with that caution. What is certain is that reciting any part of the Quran is rewarded, and Yasin's message about the Hereafter makes it a powerful reminder.

Reading and memorising it

Yasin is about 6 pages long. Reading it takes most fluent readers 15 to 20 minutes. To memorise it, learn a few lines a day and revise them each night; the five sections above make natural milestones. A teacher can make sure the long vowels and the opening letters are recited correctly (see madd).
