The river of al-Kawthar
Anas reported that the Prophet ﷺ smiled after this surah was revealed, and explained al-Kawthar as a river his Lord had promised him, with abundant good, and a pool (hawd) to which his community will come on the Day of Judgement (Sahih Muslim 400).
Lessons of the surah
- Gratitude in action: the response to a great gift is prayer and sacrifice for Allah alone.
- Consolation: mockery and loss are not the measure of a person; Allah’s favour is.
- What lasts: the Prophet’s ﷺ name is remembered across the world, while his mocker is forgotten.
Its sacrifice links it with Eid al-Adha; see Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. It is one of the easiest surahs to memorise first; see the last 10 surahs and the longest and shortest surahs.
Frequently asked questions
What is al-Kawthar?
A river in Paradise given to the Prophet ﷺ. He described it as a river whose banks are domes of hollow pearls (Sahih al-Bukhari 4964). Scholars also explain al-Kawthar as “abundant good” in general, which includes the river.
Is Surah Al-Kawthar the shortest surah?
Yes. With 3 short verses it is the shortest surah in the Quran by number of words.
Why was Surah Al-Kawthar revealed?
Commentators report that when the Prophet’s ﷺ sons died in infancy, an opponent mocked him as “cut off” (abtar), with no one to continue his name. The surah answers that it is his enemy who is cut off.
