Why start with Juz Amma
- Short surahs: most are a few lines long, so a child or new learner can finish one in days.
- Used in salah every day: these are the surahs most people recite after Al-Fatihah; see surahs to recite in salah.
- Tajweed practice: rhyming verse endings make qalqalah, madd and ghunnah easy to hear and correct.
- Mostly Makki: they focus on faith, the Hereafter and Allah’s signs, so learning their meaning builds understanding from the start.
The order to memorise it in
- Stage 1: An-Nas to Al-Fil (114 to 105), the ten shortest surahs. See our guide to the last 10 surahs.
- Stage 2: Al-Humazah to Al-Qadr (104 to 97).
- Stage 3: Al-‘Alaq to Ad-Duha (96 to 93), then Al-Layl to Al-Balad (92 to 90).
- Stage 4: Al-Fajr to Al-A‘la (89 to 87), then At-Tariq back to An-Naba (86 to 78), the longest surahs of the juz.
Revise the earlier surahs every day while adding new ones, so the first stages are not forgotten; our guide on how to revise hifz explains how. Use the hifz planner to estimate your timeline, read how to memorise the Quran for the full method, or memorise with a teacher in our online hifz course. Frequently asked questions
Why is it called Juz Amma?
Each juz is known by its first word. The 30th juz begins with Surah An-Naba: “‘Amma yatasa’alun” (“About what are they asking one another?”), so it is called Juz ‘Amma.
How many surahs are in Juz Amma?
37 surahs, from An-Naba (78) to An-Nas (114), with 564 verses in total. 34 of them are Makki.
Should I memorise Juz Amma from An-Nas backwards?
Most teachers start from the end, with the shortest surahs (An-Nas, Al-Falaq, Al-Ikhlas), then work backwards towards An-Naba, because the surahs get longer as you go back.
How long does it take to memorise Juz Amma?
With 10–15 minutes a day, many children and adults memorise it in about six months to a year. Learners who already know the short surahs often finish sooner.
