Surah Al-Muzzammil: meaning, night prayer and tarteel

Surah Al-Muzzammil, the 73rd surah, is one of the earliest revelations: 20 verses calling the Prophet ﷺ to stand in prayer at night and recite the Quran with tarteel. It is where the word “tarteel” comes from, and where the Quran later tells believers to “recite what is easy”.

The opening verses

“O you wrapped in garments, stand in prayer at night, except a little: half of it, or a little less, or a little more, and recite the Quran with measured recitation.”Al-Muzzammil 73:1–4 (meaning). Arabic: Tanzil (Uthmani, Hafs)

Night prayer and the Quran

The surah ties two things together: standing at night and reciting the Quran. The night, it says, is “more effective for concentration and more suitable for words” (73:6). The Companions took this literally, and night prayer (qiyam al-layl, often called tahajjud) became the time many of them recited the most Quran.

Verse 20 then eases the command: Allah knows some are ill, some travelling and some fighting, “so recite what is easy of the Quran”. That verse is the basis for steady, realistic daily reading; see how much Quran to read daily.

Recite with tarteel

Verse 4, “and recite the Quran with tarteel”, is the foundation of tajweed: slow, measured, clear recitation, letter by letter. Our guide to tarteel, tadweer and hadr explains the speeds of recitation, and how to recite Quran beautifully covers the voice. Al-Muzzammil is short enough to memorise in a couple of weeks and is often recited in night prayer; see how to memorise the Quran. It is followed in the mushaf by Al-Muddaththir, which also addresses the Prophet ﷺ at the start of his mission; see the first revelation of the Quran.

Frequently asked questions

What does al-Muzzammil mean?

“The one wrapped in garments”. It addresses the Prophet ﷺ, who had wrapped himself in his cloak, at the start of his mission.

How many verses are in Surah Al-Muzzammil?

20 verses, on pages 574 and 575 of the Madinah mushaf, in juz 29. The last verse is very long and is often counted as a later revelation.

Is night prayer (tahajjud) obligatory?

The opening verses commanded long night prayer at first; verse 20 then eased it. For the Muslim community, night prayer is a highly recommended sunnah, not an obligation.

What is tarteel?

Reciting the Quran slowly and clearly, giving each letter its right. The word comes from verse 4 of this surah. See our guide to tarteel, tadweer and hadr.
