“The best of stories”
The story, section by section
| Verses | Part | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| 4–6 | The dream | Yusuf sees eleven stars, the sun and the moon prostrating to him. Ya‘qub tells him not to share it with his brothers. |
| 7–18 | The well | His jealous brothers throw him into a well and bring back his shirt with false blood. Ya‘qub answers: “beautiful patience” (sabrun jamil). |
| 19–35 | Egypt and the test | Sold into the house of al-‘Aziz, Yusuf refuses the advances of his master’s wife and chooses prison over sin. |
| 36–42 | Prison | He interprets the dreams of two fellow prisoners and calls them to worship Allah alone. |
| 43–57 | The king’s dream | He interprets the dream of seven fat and seven lean cows, is cleared of wrongdoing and put in charge of Egypt’s stores. |
| 58–82 | The brothers return | Famine brings his brothers to Egypt for grain. He recognises them; they do not recognise him. Binyamin is kept back. |
| 83–101 | Reunion | Ya‘qub’s sight returns with Yusuf’s shirt; the family comes to Egypt and the dream is fulfilled. Yusuf forgives his brothers. |
| 102–111 | Closing | The story is revealed knowledge of the unseen, “a lesson for people of understanding”. |

Yusuf among the prophets
Yusuf is the son of Ya‘qub, grandson of Ishaq and great-grandson of Ibrahim, a line the Quran honours repeatedly. His name appears 27 times in the Quran, all but two of them in this surah. See the prophets mentioned in the Quran for the others.
